JORDAN

ITHACA, NEW YORK, PRESENT DAY

“That can’t happen yet,” Michael stated before anyone could speak. “You said we have to be united, not divided, and without him, we’re missing an important side of the story. I think he should be here if we truly want all the answers.”

“Are you seriously suggesting what I think you are suggesting?” Gabriel asked, outraged. “It’ll compromise our location.”

“Is that even a worry anymore?” Uriel wondered aloud. “Especially with him here.” He gestured at Dane. “I’m sure he’s keeping tabs on his son.”

I finally realized who they were talking about. “You want Satan to be here?”

“Absolutely not!” Deborah said, rising from her seat.

“No offense, Deborah, but it’s not your call,” Uriel said.

“He’s right,” Michael agreed. “It’s your house, Jordan. You should be the one to decide.”

I didn’t need time to think it over. “I’m fine with it. I just don’t know how to send him a message.”

“I think I might be able to,” Dane said, bending over to scratch the hellhound’s head. The creature rested at his feet like a house pet. Dane placed his forehead on the hound. “Call him,” he whispered. “Get one of them to bring him here.”

Dane backed off, and the hellhound howled.

When he stopped, the room was silent.

“Now we wait,” Dane announced.

“How long?” Uriel asked.

Dane shrugged. “Not sure. It could be seconds or hours.”

Chamuel patted his thighs and stood up. “In that case, let me go get some snacks for everyone.”

We all talked among ourselves. Eventually, Chamuel returned with a giant charcuterie board, which he placed on the coffee table. Everyone picked and munched on nuts, fruit, veggies, cheese, crackers, and deli meats.

I refrained and kept sipping my broth. I knew it was the best thing for me right now.

Footsteps thudded down the hall, and everyone went quiet as the king of the Underworld entered the room.

“What the hell is this?” he demanded.

Dane stood up. “Let me explain.”

“Please do, Ace, because here I thought you were in trouble, and now I find I’ve been summoned for trial.”

“No, that’s not what this is,” Dane assured him. “We’re sharing stories about the past to get everyone on the same page.”

Satan smirked. “Oh, we’re spilling secrets.”

“Uh…you could call it that,” Dane said.

Satan stepped farther into the room. “And there’s snacks.” He clapped his hands together. “There must be a lot to say.”

“Are you staying or not?” Michael asked.

“I guess so, since I was kindly invited.” He strode over to the kitchen and pulled a stool from the island, then brought it over and sat next to Dane.

With everyone present and settled, the conversation began.

“Perhaps I should start,” Aeron said. “A lot of what I know will piece things together.”

He paused for a minute. I imagine he was figuring out where to start. If I were him, I knew I would need a moment to gather my thoughts.

“My brother, Arthur, knew Evangeline throughout grade school and middle school. It wasn’t until high school, though, that they got to know each other. Once they did, they were inseparable.
